Blog #11

I know I have a lot to learn about new technologies that librarians should have at least a working knowledge. I have noticed that there is so much out there that I want to dive right into but with school, family etc there isn’t enough time in the day to keep up with everything. So I have decided to create a list of all the technologies I want to explore, and become more than a “Johnnie come lately” kind of girl. So each time I have a break I will devote an adequate amount of time becoming familiar with my list and exploring these new technologies. For example, I looked at other blogs and I am impressed as to how many people have incorporated different things (ie. logs, tumblelogs, archives, or tags) and mine is just plain old Jane. It is not a jealous thing that gets me, it’s the fact that I allowed myself to become “obsolete” when it comes to technology. So no more excuses, if it is new and I can incorporate this technology in my career then I will learn it. I will still have on hand rice cakes, my endless baking supplies and my hot tea collection for those stressful moments.

So I have added a new technology application that I so want to try – don’t laugh if I am behind but it is still interesting to me. I was reading a technology site for something and I ran across something called slidecasting. To my understanding it is a form of creating synchronized slides (ie PowerPoint) and combining it with audio files. That is so cool! I could see all kinds of practical application for doing something like this. So it has been added to my list and I will work on slidecasting when this semester is over.

You have made a very lofty goal! It almost sounds like a New Year's resolution. A Spring resolution, if you will... I am not so goal-oriented when it comes to new technology. I take more of the "that sounds too cool, I've got to find out more" approach. It works really well in the library world since libraries and schools are all about technology I can often get sent to trainings to play for the day.

Hey Jenny

I just don't like the idea of have a passing knowledge of things especially technology. When time permits I want to try to learn something new.

I wonder how different slidecasting is from screencasting. My guess is that it's just Powerpoint with a voiceover but without the ability to do callouts. I'll have to investigate...
