Blog #12

I really can’t believe we are approaching the end of this semester. This semester blew by so fast that it is almost like a blur. I feel as though I have learned so much that I need to catch my breath to appreciate this new found knowledge.
I have realized a lot of things, for example keeping a blog is not as bad as I thought. There were weeks in which I thought I had to nothing write on my blog. However, when I read my classmates blogs, I became inspired and remembered something that occurred to me that I forgot. So with that said – thank you class for sharing your thoughts, and experiences!!!

I really enjoyed the presentations of all the wiki that were created by our class. It really just reaffirms to me that I have a lot to learn. In my previous blog I stated that I wanted to be more proficient in several areas and become more of an accomplished user when it pertains to a lot of the Web 2.0 applications that we used this semester.

Overall, I learned a lot and I do appreciate the challenges of this class.

I know I have a lot to learn about new technologies that librarians should have at least a working knowledge. I have noticed that there is so much out there that I want to dive right into but with school, family etc there isn’t enough time in the day to keep up with everything. So I have decided to create a list of all the technologies I want to explore, and become more than a “Johnnie come lately” kind of girl. So each time I have a break I will devote an adequate amount of time becoming familiar with my list and exploring these new technologies. For example, I looked at other blogs and I am impressed as to how many people have incorporated different things (ie. logs, tumblelogs, archives, or tags) and mine is just plain old Jane. It is not a jealous thing that gets me, it’s the fact that I allowed myself to become “obsolete” when it comes to technology. So no more excuses, if it is new and I can incorporate this technology in my career then I will learn it. I will still have on hand rice cakes, my endless baking supplies and my hot tea collection for those stressful moments.

So I have added a new technology application that I so want to try – don’t laugh if I am behind but it is still interesting to me. I was reading a technology site for something and I ran across something called slidecasting. To my understanding it is a form of creating synchronized slides (ie PowerPoint) and combining it with audio files. That is so cool! I could see all kinds of practical application for doing something like this. So it has been added to my list and I will work on slidecasting when this semester is over.

This was an interesting week for me why? I got in a fight with my Cannon MP530 printer and I let it beat me up. I spent over 2hours trying to get the printer to recognize that of the four printer cartridges only one color, cyan, was the only color that was out. However, the yellow tank started to blink and I couldn’t get it to recognize that it was full. This is not the first time this has happened. I seem to experience printer issues when I really, really need to print something to proofread. Note, by all appearances I am really patient and I love a challenge but come on, this is such a problematic printer that I really should just drop it out the window. What is really frustrating is that I don’t use the color because the ink by itself is ridiculously pricey so I live with black and white copies and I like it.

Ok I will have to admit my true feelings for using Audacity and creating podcasts. I have been having a blast with this technology. When I am recording myself I have to remind myself that “silly girl, they can’t see you so stop with the shaking voice”. Also I hear a combination of my mother and my older sister in my voice which is actually kind of weird. Anyway, I can’t wait to get a working script put together for this project. This actually made up for the fact that I was actually having printer issues this week. I haven’t turned on the printer since Monday --

The break was very good for me and my family we decided to take a tour of apartments in Indy. We started on the east side of the city and ended up on the north side of downtown Indy. The tour of the apartments was fine for me (I have owned two homes and rented one apartment) but the fun I had was watching my two cousins picking and choosing which apartments they could see themselves living in. Both of them want a two bedrooms, however, when we came to looking at townhouses, one of them said that it was too much house for her to clean and the other said for this price why not look at homes with an option to buy. Overall it was a very good experience, and I have no regrets about moving to Indy in the fall to finish up on my degree.

I totally enjoyed class today and I can’t wait until we start to create the pod and screencast. I really can see how this technology can add little more appeal to the wiki project. One of my concerns is coming up with a good script and being able to record something that would appeal to the larger audience.

There was an article from the Associated Pressed dated March 5 in which 40,000 people in the Las Vegas area may have gotten sick. This clinic is accused of reusing syringes and vials of medication for over four years. What is more sickening is that the workers were told by management to reuse the vials and syringes in order to cut costs. The article reports that a 67 year old man was the first to report this case. He noticed he was getting sick, losing weight, his urine was turning dark and his stomach hurt. Of course he and other people would never think that when they are having these symptoms that they should be tested for hepatitis and the he may also be exposed to HIV.

It wasn’t until “health inspectors observed a clinic employee use the same syringe twice to extract anesthesia from a single-dose vial”. When I read this article I was so, so disturbed that I couldn’t find anything else to put on my wiki because it was something that is so horrible. I have so many questions that I hardly know where to start. 1) are the clinic employees just as responsible as management when it comes to reusing the vials and syringes? 2) when this goes to trial (I wouldn’t see why it won’t) in addition to the owners, will the employees, and other parties that were aware received monetary compensation also be held responsible? 3) I can see lots of lawsuits as a result of this case, but how do these people ever trust the health care system again?

Web of Lies

I understand and appreciate the Internet and the possible good that it can do but I have some concerns when it comes to “social networking” on the web. I understand people like to talk and make friends, however, how do you know that the person you are conversing with on the Internet is truly who they say they are. I think of the Internet as a permanent source of information and once your personal data is out there you can’t take it back. I heard a story about a woman who is being terrorized by someone on the web. She “met” this man on some social networking chat group and they exchanged all kinds of personal information. As a result this individual was actually someone who trolls chat groups and gets people to volunteer personal information about themselves.

Now as a woman, I wouldn’t purposefully put myself in harm’s way (ie walking down dark alleys, taking or giving rides to strangers etc) I would be aware of my surroundings and watch who I speak to etc. Now as a woman “with some common sense” I would treat these social networking chat groups, face book etc in the same fashion and not give out personal information. Again, the Internet should be perceived as a permanent source of information and people should be very careful.

Now I have to convince my sister and niece of this information – they believe that everyone on the Internet is who they say they are. Collectively they are very silly women!

Posting #6

Last night I was working on my html project for my S532 class and I was on a good role until I came to step 12 out of 14 steps and I must have blinked my eyes because my page became very goofy looking. So I spent the next two hours trying to retrace my steps to resolve the problem and about 2:30am I just tossed my hands in the air and said forget it!! I left my desk absolutely irritated with myself (even the cats stayed away) and I went to the kitchen and made myself a very, very, very hot cup of tea and grabbed a rice cake and started over. I’m sure other people would have tried to stay in there and try to undo what they did wrong, but I thought about how much time I wasted trying to trace my unspeakable mistake. So when I started from scratched I noticed how much faster I was picking up the prior steps and my attitude at that moment became very jovial. As a result I figured out what I did wrong (goofy me was working very fast and I overwrote a mistake). Now my project works just fine – so yea for me.

I have got to remember that when I am dealing with new technology my learning curve is less tolerant as it was several years ago. I have to remember that it’s ok to take a break, it’s ok to ask questions and it TOTALLY ok to start over and try it again from scratch. I must remember to say and to think of this consistently: It’s ok – go get a cup of tea RELAX AND CHILL!!!!
